Anugerah Grammy untuk Best Hard Rock Performance mula diberikan pada tahun 1990. Pada mulanya ia dikenali sebagai Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance pada Grammy Awards 1989 dan dimenangi oleh kumpulan Jethro Tull (gambar atas) untuk lagu mereka Crest of a Knave.
